Thames Hare and Hounds Alumni Race 10th December 2011

The frost hadn’t melted from the night before when the 5 mile race kicked off in the afternoon sunshine.  There were record numbers this year which meant that there was always someone right on your tail to escape and someone just in front to hunt down. The narrow paths were congested and, to make the route more hazardous, there were fallen branches to hurdle and protruding tree routes hidden underneath the leaves.

Sherborne fielded a strong team with Ed Knudsen leading us in with a time of 28.37 closely followed by Tom Robinson in 29.15. A couple of minutes later Simon Dawson crossed the line in 31.52, a minute faster than his previous best time in 2008, followed by Ed Pitt Ford in 32.21. Not long after Nick Lamb in 39.32 was pipped at the post by Tim Love in 39.31. Simon Leathes in 43.20 and Ian Cull in 39.44 then rounded off the team.

After the race there was an excellent tea put on in the pavilion. We came 7th out of 19 teams this year; however, the competition was strong with the top three runners completing the course in well under 27 minutes.

For the first time we had a sealed handicap to compete for the Chataway Trophy which Simon Dawson won in some style. This will be awarded to Simon at the supper after the Sherborne Trophy on February 4th.

Afterwards we retired to the Hand in Hand pub for a well-deserved pint and some great conversation. The next two races are the Sherborne Trophy against the School on  4th February at 2.00 p.m and the Hyde Park Relays in London on Saturday 3rd March. Next year’s Alumni race will probably be December 8th 2012 so put it in the diary now. If you would like to run in any O.S event please e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
